When Adron and Livia’s paths crossed, sparks flew. Livia seeks a stranger to give her virginity to escape a forced to marriage to a man twice her father’s age. Adron suffers PTSD because of several weeks of torture he endured at the hands of a deranged man. In this story, we meet Adron Quiakides, a former League assassin and Livia typpa Vista. Of the three stories, Fire and Ice was my ‘favorite. It would be nice if Kenyon would rewriting this story with a lot more substance. However, the premise intrigued me but it left me wanting more. An oddball in this collection of stories as it has nothing to do with the League world. The Neighbors tell the story of fourteen-year-old Jaime, who is certain his neighbors are up to no good and sets out to prove his theory. A very short read, which left me wanting more. Jinx sets out to find her before the hit could be executed. A kill on sight order initiated by the League had Dakari running for her life. The story focused on Jinx’s reunion with his younger sister, Dakari. The stories are Born of Rage, The Neighbors and Fire and Ice.īorn of Rage features Jinx and Eve. I went into this book expecting a single story, but I got three stories. Born of Rage is the third book in The League: Eve of Destruction series. And this week, when she came to Portland, I not only got to hear her speak in person, but also got to treat her to dinner. Today, in 2019, I'm awe-struck to actually be exchanging email with Vicki Robin, discussing the past, present, and future of financial independence. It inspired me to seek financial independence, which the book defines as “no longer having to work for money”. In 2004, the book transformed my relationship with money. In 1992, Vicki Robin (and her partner, Joe Dominguez) published Your Money or Your Life, a book designed to help readers transform their relationship with money. So too is Dave Ramsey, who has helped countless people - including me - get out of debt.īut perhaps my biggest hero is an unassuming 73-year-old woman in cat-eye glasses who lives on Whidbey Island in Washington's Puget Sound. Long-time readers know that billionaire investor Warren Buffett is one of my heroes. They're the people who make personal finance accessible to average people. Or, better yet, walking on the moon.Īs an adult, my heroes are more mundane. I dreamed of playing pro football one day. When I was a boy, my heroes were athletes and astronauts. As arranged by his parents, both of whom died during his childhood, Dante wed Gemma di Manetto Donati around 1285 the couple is known to have had at least three children. During his teens, Dante demonstrated a keen interest in literature he undertook an apprenticeship with Brunetto Latini, a celebrated poet and prose writer of vernacular Italian, and befriended the poet Guido Cavalcanti. Dante said that when Beatrice greeted him in passing nine years later, his love was confirmed. At the age of nine he purportedly, briefly glimpsed the eight-year-old Beatrice Portinari and, struck by her beauty, fell in love. Scholars surmise that he received formal instruction in grammar, language, and philosophy at one of the Franciscan schools in the city. Divided into three sections-Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso-The Divine Comedy presents an encyclopedic overview of the mores, attitudes, beliefs, philosophies, aspirations, and material aspects of the medieval world.īorn in Florence, Italy around 1265, Dante was the son of Alighiero di Bellincione Alighieri and Bella di Abati, and he grew up among Florentine aristocracy. Italian poet and scholar Dante Alighieri is best known for his masterpiece La Commedia (known in English as The Divine Comedy), which is universally considered one of world literature’s greatest poems. Nova and Adrian are a fierce, yet sweet couple, and I also loved the introduction of a new budding romance between teammates. Additionally, the romance is – once again – fabulous! I am HERE for more slow burn enemies-to-lovers (where-one-does-not-even-know-they-are-enemies) relationships. This series has one of the most compelling groups of companions I’ve read in YA in a very long time. I loved watching Adrian and Nova grow as individuals and a team, alongside the rest of the Renegades and Anarchists. Every character, including many of the side characters, receive additional development that helps them to become authentic and refreshing. Once again, I love the cast of characters in this series. The power dynamics in this story are captivating and complex, and I’m desperate for more. I really love the direction Marissa Meyer has taken with the second installment in terms of how superheroes are viewed and how supervillains are treated. Morals are questioned, friends become suspects, and tensions are higher than ever. Conflict goes far beyond what we already know of the Renegades’ power and the Anarchists’ will for vengeance. I cannot get enough of the politics of this world. Renegades was already a fantastically constructed world, but Archenemies breaks the boundaries for what we know of Gatlon City. Stay tuned for my spoiler-filled video review! In the story, the children visit a mission where they see ghosts. History, of course, informs the daily lives of White children, too, but in a way that means they're ignorant-and are taught ignorance-until they're deemed "ready" for that dark history. Native children, and children of color, know far more history than one might expect, because history informs and shapes our daily lives, today. I imagine some people defending the book by saying its audience isn't old enough for the complexity of that history, but that holds true only for a selected (possibly white) audience. The story she tells, and the reviews of her story, demonstrate (yet again) an ignorance of history. I think Telgemeier's Ghosts is one of those problematic books, but I don't think that Telgemeier is aware that she's doing that same thing. One example (there are many) is Susan Cooper's Ghost Hawk. Anytime I see a book that has something to do with ghosts, I wonder if the author is going to be contributing to the too-high-pile of problematic books with characters who are haunted or inspired by the ghost of a Native character. He likes all the little mice and he loved seeing all the children. The nephew enjoys a good Anatole story too. I don’t know why I love Anatole so much, but I think these stories are very fun. I know this is a version of the Pied Piper of Hamlin, but it’s also so Anatole and French. This is one of the last Anatole that Eve wrote and she still has unique situations to put her mice in. I love that kind of solution if it works. It’s funny and uses music as the solution to the problem. They hold the man’s flute hostage and free everyone.Īs a musician, I love this story.
